Welcome to the Tarkir of the past!

Across the harsh landscapes of this world there are only even more hardened people! The dragons that once ruled have been exterminated, and in their place now exist five clans, each of which stands for one of the values that the dragons symbolized, and each of which is led by a magnificent warlord called a Khan:

  • Abzan Houses (WBG) stands for sustainability; their symbol is the dragon's shell and they are led by the khan Anafenza.
  • Jeskai Way (URW) stands for agility; their symbol is the dragon's eye and they are led by the khan Narset.
  • Sultai Brood (BGU) stands for ruthlessness; their symbol is the dragon's jaws and they are led by the khan Sidisi.
  • Mardu Horde (RWB) stands for speed; their symbol is the dragon's wing and they are led by the khan Zurgo Helmsmasher.
  • Temur Frontier (GUR) stands for savagery; their symbol is the dragon's claw and they are led by the khan Surrak Dragonclaw.

Tarkir is also known as the home plane for Sarkhan Vol , who is deeply fascinated by dragons, and who, after traveling far and wide in the multiverse (partly in the service of the evil dragon Nicol Bolas), returns home.

In Fate Reforged, the story from Khans of Tarkir continues, and Sarkhan Vol travels 1,000 years back in time to change the timeline and bring the dragons back to the present! The grand battle between the evil Nicol Bolas and the ghostly dragon Ugin proves to be the turning point - but is Sarkhan able to prevent Ugin's death in time?

Highlights for Fate Reforged :

  • The five clans still exist - but in a different form in Khans of Tarkir! There are no multicolor cards as you know them (with gold edges), but many cards have abilities that require hybrid mana of two colors in addition to the card's own! (Eg a green card with an ability, which requires either red or blue mana.)
  • Cards from the Abzan clan with Bolster let you make your weakest creature stronger, and your often cheaper than normal +1/+1 counter effects.
  • Creatures from the Mardu clan with Dash allow you to play them with haste for a second mana cost end normally, then return to hand at the end of the turn (if they steady you on the battlefield).
  • Cards from the Jeskai clan have steady Prowess , the Sultai clan consistently uses Delve , and Temur continues to reward decks with big creatures with the Ferocious bonus ability - but some of the cards use these mechanics in a new way!
  • Morph is further explored - among other things with the Manifest mechanic, which transforms cards from e.g. the top of your library for face-down 2/2 creatures. If one of these creatures is also a creature on the other side (which the opponent can't see), you can flip it whenever you want for its real mana cost!
  • And more news to follow!
